When Jessica first walked into Matern Staffing’s office, she interviewed for a manufacturing position to earn extra summer money. She had no idea she would soon receive a call back about an internal administrative opportunity.
The unexpected offer felt like a plot twist in a movie. Jessica recalls, “After my interview, I got a call for a second interview for an internal position. I felt like I was in a movie. This was the opportunity I had hoped for, and it seemed too good to be true!”
Jessica’s Background
Raised in Stafford, Virginia, Jessica is just days away from earning her bachelor’s degree in communication and digital studies from the University of Mary Washington. Her favorite classes include Applied Digital Studies, where she learned to code websites, and an Archaeology elective, which provided unique insights into the past. Whether coding, uncovering history, or helping job seekers, Jessica approaches every task with a desire to find something extraordinary.
Learning the Staffing Ropes & Setting Goals
During her internship at Matern Staffing, Jessica has managed a range of responsibilities. She schedules interviews, greets candidates and clients, guides applicants through the hiring process, and assists employees with paperwork. As the first face or voice many encountered, Jessica takes pride in working with people from diverse backgrounds. She also finds satisfaction in the organizational aspects of her role.
From the start, Jessica also set clear goals to improve her professionalism and interpersonal skills. She aimed to one day become a Staffing Coordinator.
Making an Impact
Throughout her internship, Jessica has made a remarkable impact at Matern Staffing. Her ability to connect with candidates, maintain a positive attitude, and take on responsibilities with enthusiasm has not only benefited our office but also prepared her for the next chapter in her career.
Fond Memories & Reflections
One of Jessica’s favorite memories is the Office Olympics, which she calls “the funnest work experience” she’s ever had. Beyond the fun, she overcame challenges like managing emotional calls from candidates. With support from her team, she developed the confidence to handle difficult conversations, which she now considers a key strength.
Reflecting on her journey, Jessica has grown both professionally and personally. She’s improved her multitasking and organizational abilities, built stronger communication skills, and gained a deeper understanding of recruiting. Most importantly, she discovered her passion for helping others find their path.
Jessica states, “I have had so many people come in with various situations in their lives and we are able to find work for them and help them get back on their feet. Realizing how much we can do to help others find their path in life was the biggest impact on me.”
Post-graduation Plans
As Jessica approaches graduation, she plans to continue her journey with Matern Staffing as an Administrative Assistant with a career progression path to a Staffing Coordinator. She also aims to earn certifications to expand her expertise and make an even greater impact. For Jessica, every day at Matern has brought growth, joy, and purpose—a reflection of her dedication and the supportive environment she helped foster.
Congratulations, Jessica, on your upcoming graduation! We are proud of everything you’ve accomplished and excited to see what you’ll achieve next. Your journey has been an inspiration, and we’re grateful to have been part of it.
