As a Junior Project Estimator, you’ll work closely with an experienced Project Estimator to review project specifications, analyze materials and labor requirements, and help develop accurate project pricing. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the estimating process from the ground up while contributing to specialty residential and commercial construction projects.
Matern Staffing is hiring a Junior Project Estimator (job id #3934) for a specialty construction firm in Stafford, Virginia. This individual will collaborate with the Project Estimator, clients, engineers, vendors, and internal team members to gather information, evaluate costs, and prepare project estimates and timelines.
This is a contract-to-hire opportunity that is ideal for someone with previous construction or estimating experience or a motivated, detail-oriented candidate who is eager to learn a specialized area of the construction industry.
Salary:
- $23–$28 per hour, based on experience.

What You’ll Do:
- Review project specifications, blueprints, drawings, and related documents.
- Collaborate with the Project Estimator to identify material, labor, vendor, and scheduling requirements.
- Communicate with clients, engineers, contractors, vendors, and internal team members to clarify project details.
- Research material and labor costs to support accurate project estimates.
- Prepare preliminary cost estimates, pricing documents, and project reports.
- Assist with developing estimated project schedules and completion timelines.
- Request and organize vendor and supplier pricing.
- Maintain accurate estimating records, project documentation, and cost information.
- Identify missing information, pricing discrepancies, or potential project challenges.
- Assist with process improvements that increase estimating accuracy and efficiency.
- Support the transition of awarded projects from estimating to the project team.
What You’ll Need:
- Ability to read or learn to read construction blueprints, drawings, and project specifications.
- Previous construction, estimating, project coordination, or related experience is preferred but not required.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and follow-through.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with customers, vendors, engineers, contractors, and teammates.
- Curiosity about how things are built and an interest in identifying practical solutions.
- A proactive, positive approach with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with QuickBooks is preferred.
- Willingness to learn construction materials, pricing, terminology, and estimating procedures.
