When William joined Matern Staffing at the end of May, he was ready for a change. After years as a Hydro Operator on CNC machines, he had mastered precision and problem-solving but felt limited in growth and opportunity. He wanted something that challenged him and something that could take his strong work ethic in a new direction.

Starting Fresh: Making the Leap into a New Industry

That opportunity came when he applied with Matern Staffing for a position with a local precast concrete manufacturer. From the start, he was drawn to how much we emphasized safety and provided guidance as he stepped into an unfamiliar industry. With our support, he moved into concrete work, an entirely new field that required fresh skills, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.

“Matern didn’t just place me in a role. They gave me the tools, encouragement, and advice I needed to succeed in a completely different industry.” – William G.

He began his journey as an Industrial Janitor, learning the ins and outs of the work environment while proving himself as a reliable, motivated team member. His consistency and focus quickly paid off, and soon he advanced into a Woodchipper role, a hands-on position that keeps him outdoors, active, and engaged every day.

Growing Through Hard Work and Dedication

In his new role, he’s responsible for maintaining the flow of materials, ensuring quality, and coordinating product movement to shipping. It’s physically demanding work, but it’s also rewarding. He’s discovered that the key to success in this environment is showing up every day with determination, paying attention to detail, and being willing to learn from those around him.

His steady progress has shown that effort and consistency don’t go unnoticed, especially in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting like concrete production. Within just a few months, he’s moved from learning the basics to excelling in a role that plays an essential part in the production process.

“William has been an incredible addition to the our team. From his first day, he’s brought a strong work ethic, great attention to detail, and a positive attitude to everything he does. He takes pride in his work and is always willing to jump in wherever he’s needed.” – Nic K., Office Manager, precast concrete manufacturer

Finding Confidence and Community on the Job

Beyond developing technical skills, he’s also grown personally. Working alongside a diverse team has helped him become a better communicator and collaborator. He’s especially valued the chance to work closely with teammates from different cultural backgrounds, which has strengthened his appreciation for teamwork and connection.

“He keeps the team’s spirits high with his sense of humor. We’re truly grateful to have William on our team and appreciate the impact he’s made here at Faddis!” – Nic K., Office Manager, precast manufacturing plant

This growth in both skill and confidence fuels his motivation to keep learning, improving, and taking on new challenges within the industry.

“I’ve built more confidence by stepping outside my comfort zone and proving I can succeed in a job that’s very different from my past experience.” – William G.

Looking Ahead: New Skills, Better Opportunities, and Gratitude

Today, he looks back at his journey with pride. What started as a leap into the unknown has become a rewarding career filled with better pay, hands-on learning, and a strong sense of belonging.

He’s grateful for the opportunity to build something new, both for his career and for himself. His story is proof that with the right mindset, consistent effort, and supportive guidance, anyone can transition successfully into a new field and thrive.

His journey is a reminder that when you stay open-minded, respectful, and committed to doing your best work, new doors open – sometimes in places you never expected.
