When Melanie first walked through the doors of Matern Staffing nearly two years ago, she was fresh out of her first year at Discipleship Training School and preparing for her second year at Revive School. Thanks to a classmate’s mom who worked at Matern, she found an unexpected opportunity. She landed an internship at Matern that would shape her personally and professionally in ways she never anticipated.
Stepping Into Staffing
It was Melanie’s first office job—what she playfully called her first “big girl job”—and stepping away from the restaurant world into the staffing world was, admittedly, a little intimidating. But it didn’t take long for her to realize that this wasn’t your typical office experience. She dove into job postings, answered phones, welcomed job seekers, created social media content, and even led interviews. Each task stretched her skills, built her confidence, and gave her a deeper appreciation for people’s stories. She quickly discovered each day in staffing brought something new—and she loved learning and contributing across many areas.
One of the most meaningful takeaways from her time with us? Learning to see the person behind the paper. Through every resume and conversation, she grew in empathy, learning to listen beyond the surface and honor each person’s journey. Whether it was helping a candidate find the right job or brainstorming an Instagram reel, she poured her heart into it.
In addition to gaining confidence, communications skills and learning business operations, Melanie also developed a great appreciation for serving others while at Matern. She realized the impact connecting with people has, and intentionally structures those connections–through words, tasks, and interactions–to maximize the value.
Next Steps for Melanie
Now, she’s stepping into a new season. She’ll be working in an administrative role within a health insurance business that allows space for her true passion: mission work. It’s a role that builds on the skills she developed at Matern—professionalism, communication, and heart-led service—while giving her the freedom to pursue her calling.
As she moves forward, she leaves us with wise words:
Be open-minded. One internship can open more doors than you think. You never know who you’ll meet or what skills you’ll develop. – Melanie S.
We’re so proud of her growth, grateful for her contributions, and excited to see where her next steps lead. Matern may have been her first “big girl job,” but it certainly won’t be the last place she makes a lasting impact.
