Matern Staffing is hiring a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a nonprofit organization in Fredericksburg, VA. This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned financial professional to make a lasting impact by ensuring the organization’s financial stability and aligning fiscal strategies with its mission-driven goals.

As CFO, you will lead the design and execution of fiscal strategies in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan. Your role will involve collaborating, coordinating, and communicating with key stakeholders to drive major investment and financing initiatives. With a strong focus on both short- and long-term planning, you’ll advise the CEO/President and executive leadership team by analyzing financial strengths and weaknesses, identifying opportunities, and proposing actionable solutions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing business and financial plans while managing risks related to cash flow, capital allocation, resource deployment, and compliance requirements
  • Overseeing the budgeting, modeling, and forecasting processes, ensuring that all financial reporting is timely, accurate, and supported by effective internal controls
  • Driving data-informed decisions through strategic insights, ensuring alignment with organizational goals

Chief Financial Officer reviewing reports with teamWhat You’ll Do: 

Financial Strategy & Planning:

  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and long-term goals
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and ensure compliance throughout the fiscal year, providing regular reports to the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with department leadership to develop, implement, and monitor financial strategies that align with the organization’s mission and long-term goals

Financial Management:

  • Lead a team of financial and accounting staff, outsourced partner teams, and consulting services
  • Oversee all financial transactions, accounts receivable and payable and general ledger activities
  • Conduct regular financial analysis to identify trends, cost-saving opportunities, and potential internal or external financial risks
  • Ensure proper financial controls and procedures are in place to safeguard assets and maintain compliance

Grants & Fundraising:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for securing external funding through grants and donations
  • Ensure restricted funds are used appropriately and in compliance with grant terms and requirements

Investments & Cash Management:

  • Lead the development and management of the organization’s investment portfolio, optimize returns while balancing risk, and execute cash management strategies to maintain liquidity for operations and initiatives
  • Cultivate relationships with banking and investment partners to enhance financial positioning, and monitor capital assets to ensure resource preservation and growth

Financial Reporting & Compliance:

  • Manage all aspects of the annual fiscal audit process
  • Collaborate with outsourced partners to prepare timely and accurate financial statements and present to stakeholders
  • Ensure adherence to all financial reporting requirements, including IRS filings and grant reporting obligations

Board Engagement:

  • Present financial reports and updates to the Board of Directors, supporting their fiduciary role and responsibilities for assessing financial health and making informed decisions
  • Serve as the Executive Staff Lead with the Board’s Finance Committee and support their efforts in financial oversight

What You’ll Need: 

  • Finance or Accounting Degree
  • 7 years’ work experience in financial management
  • Previous experience managing a team, internal/external stakeholders and collaborating with Board of Directors
  • Strong background in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and investment and cash management
  • Strong experience in GAAP and auditing processes
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and lead to develop employees and meet goals
